Socialists brief Council of Europe rapporteurs on "democracy deficit," says MP

Representatives of the main opposition Socialist Party and invited experts on Wednesday briefed rapporteurs of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) "about trends in the past one year demonstrated by measures that went against basic EU values and restrictions of democratic rights that resulted in a democracy deficit," the deputy party group leader said.

The issues covered included the drafting of Hungary's new constitution, the new supreme law, the media law, and recent trends in the media, said Vilmos Szabo. The rapporteurs have also been briefed about the "politically motivated lay-offs" in the past one year, he added.

Gergely Barandy of the Socialist Party said the rapporteurs were most interested in the drafting of the new constitution, the media law and "the elimination of checks and balances".
