Attila Mesterházy Elected Head of Socialist Fraction at NATO Parliamentary Assembly

The NATO Parliamentary Assembly held its session in Halifax, Canada this week, during which parliamentary representatives from NATO member states and partner countries discussed the tasks deriving from the changing of the global security environment and challenges within the alliance.

At the meeting, personal positions were also on the agenda, during which a new House Speaker and Committee Chairs were elected by the General Assembly. As a result, Attila Mesterházy was elected leader of the left-wing representative group of NATO member states and chaire of the Transatlantic Defense and Security Co-operation Subcommittee.

Since our NATO accession, this was the first time that a Hungarian representative was elected faction leader of a party family.

On Monday, the General Assembly adopted the report of the Socialist Representative as rapporteur on the defense expenditures of NATO member states entitled "Sharing Burdens: New Obligations in a New Era."
