Presenting the decisions of the MSZP's national presidency, the party president said they had strengthened the alliance with Dialogue with the aim of breaking Fidesz's hegemony in the 2019 municipal elections.
He added that their goal in Budapest was also to free the capital from the captivity of Fidesz, and the most suitable candidate to do this was the only left-wing candidate, Gergely Karácsony (Dialogue).
“We shall keep our word; Gergely Karácsony won the first round of the pre-election of mayor-candidates against Socialist Csaba Horváth. Then MSZP committed itself to supporting the winner,” he said in response to a question, adding that he personally was surprised that DK would run an independent candidate in the pre-election of the capital.
Bertalan Tóth also reported that, on his proposal, the presidency appointed member of the national presidency Kata Tüttő and caucus leader Ágnes Kunhalmi to assist Gergely in his Budapest mayor-candidate campaign and strengthen his support.
“The presidential board appointed vice president Imre Komjáthi local government campaign coordinator in the country, while former MP Anita Heringes became the new campaign director,” he said.
Bertalan Tóth also said that county organizations were invited to collaborate in the interest of common county lists.
He also outlined the Presidency's position that the party's internal forums are open to free expression of members, but the presidency does not tolerate backbiting or any attempt to break the organization or unity of the community. Anyone who goes against this, will be expelled from the community, he stressed.
In response to the suggestion that ethical proceedings could be launched against Tibor Szanyi, who has repeatedly criticized the party's leaders since the European Parliamentary elections, Bertalan Tóth said that this was not the competence of the Presidency, the national board of disciplinary affairs decides on this.
