The Istanbul Convention, which entered into force in 2014, is a convention of the Council of Europe on the prevention and combating of violence against women and domestic violence. It is the most advanced and comprehensive international legal instrument in this field.
After the adoption of the report, Zita Gurmai stressed: "The Istanbul Convention saves lives and should be adopted by all countries. I hope that Fidesz, who has been postponing the ratification of the Convention for five years now, does not want to keep on supporting wife beating MPs much longer.
The Istanbul Convention has been ratified by 34 Member States of the Council of Europe and has been signed by 11 other Member States. The Hungarian Government keeps postponing its ratification referring to various reasons.
